The development opportunity
An evidence-based view of why this format exists, where it sells, and what to develop. Product-line counts come from Ecosea's own market scan; market figures are from public sources, linked below.
Market rationaleWhy this format?
Sweet chilli gives prawns a ready-seasoned, value-added proposition with almost no preparation: the marinade does the flavouring work, so the pack can move straight from fridge or freezer to pan, oven or air fryer. A fixed 200 g portion suits a starter, a light two-person meal or a protein component within a larger plate, and the same flavour platform works across both raw-marinated and coated formats.
Where it playsChannel and occasion
UK multiple retail, primarily chilled and frozen seafood. Chilled shellfish is the sector still growing, warm-water prawns dominate shellfish volume, and prepared/sauce formats are expanding faster than natural. The strongest fit is the mid-week evening meal and starter occasion, with secondary potential in air-fryer and sharing occasions where a sweet, mildly spicy glaze is familiar and low-effort.
Product propositionWhat to differentiate?
Sugar: sweet chilli marinades can carry substantial sugar; offer a reduced-sugar or no-added-sugar variant and state sugars per 100 g clearly on front of pack. Sodium: with average intake well above guidance, control salt in the marinade and communicate sodium per 100 g rather than competing on flavour intensity alone. Prawn and glaze integrity: declare prawn percentage prominently and avoid a sauce-heavy pack; a higher prawn-to-marinade ratio, visible chilli/pepper pieces and a glaze that clings rather than pools gives a tangible quality cue against commodity packs.
