The development opportunity
An evidence-based view of why this format exists, where it sells, and what to develop. Product-line counts come from Ecosea's own market scan; market figures are from public sources, linked below.
Market rationaleWhy this format?
Bao is a compact, hand-held carrier that turns prawn into a portion-controlled frozen meal or sharing item. It fits a freeze-steam-serve model: the bun provides the eat-anywhere format, while the filling carries the prawn value signal and needs little kitchen skill to plate. Demand context is supportive - U.S. seafood consumption was 19.1 lb per capita in 2023, and fresh-plus-frozen products accounted for almost 80% of U.S. seafood consumption in 2021. In UK retail, frozen seafood still represented 23% of category value in the year to October 2025. Bao lets a prawn proposition enter that frozen space in a familiar, low-friction eating format rather than as a niche raw-ingredient product.
Where it playsChannel and occasion
Mainstream frozen grocery in the UK and South Africa, placed in the prepared-meal or party-food freezer rather than a specialist ethnic bay. The 8-pack dual-flavour format supports household trial and variety, while the 12-piece pack suits sharing, entertaining and dim-sum-style platters. Foodservice is a secondary fit: starters, bar snacks, buffet and hot-counter items where steam or microwave regeneration is available.
Product propositionWhat to differentiate?
Prawn specification: declare a meaningful prawn inclusion and use visible whole-piece or half-prawn texture - the local benchmark declares 9% prawn, so a higher, clearly stated inclusion is an easy quality cue. Flavour architecture: use contrast inside one pack (for example an aromatic coconut-curry bun paired with a tangy kimchi bun) to drive trial and repeat without needing two SKUs. Pack and cook format: make cook-from-frozen timing explicit and offer steam-in-bag or microwave-safe packaging, with a resealable format for partial use and count size and price per bun immediately legible on the front of pack.
